Dansville New York

About Dansville New York

Dansville is a village in Livingston County, New York, United States. As of the 2000 census, the village population was 4,832. The village is named after Daniel Faulkner, an early settler.

The Village of Dansville is within the Town of North Dansville in the eastern part of the county. Interstate 390 passes next to the west side of the village.

ZIP code 14437

History
Daniel Faulkner founded the village in 1795. When Livingston County was created, the village was in the Town of Sparta. Dansville became an incorporated village in 1845.

A spa, which opened in 1854, drew many prominent people for the water cure. Located in the "Castle on the Hill," the spa operated for many years under several owners.

Additional facts about Dansville
Dansville Municipal Airport (DSV) is a general aviation airport located north of the village. The airport was opened in 1927, primarily by the efforts of World War I aviator Lynn Pickard. A Balloon Festival is held at the airport in early September.

Dansville is at the northern edge of the range of the American dogwood (Cornus florida), and celebrates this with a Dogwood Festival each spring.

Castle on the Hill--a former water cure facility that resembles a castle overlooking Dansville from the hillside. Founded in 1858 by Dr. James Caleb Jackson as the "Our Home on the Hillside", the original building burned in 1882. The present building opened in 1883. It has changed hands several times, becoming a physical fitness hotel (the Physical Culture Hotel) where the rich and famous came from New York City and Philadelphia to "get away from it all". The building now stands vacant.

The First Breakfast Cereal - In 1863, Granula may have been a healthier morning option than pork, but it wasn't particularly tasty or easy to eat. The world's first breakfast cereal was comprised of dense bran nuggets that had to be soaked overnight in order to be chewable. Their inventor Dr. James Caleb Jackson operated the Dansville Sanitarium in Dansville, New York. His staunch vegetarian heart was in the right place when he served his old-school health spa patrons Granula. But the cereal was destined not to last.

One of the patrons of Dr. Jackson's sanitarium was a woman named Ellen G. White. Led by a vision from God in which she was told human beings should reject meat, she went on to form the Seventh Day Adventist religion. She never created a breakfast cereal, but as destiny would have it, one of the members of Sister White's new church was a man named John Kellogg.

A grant from NYS for $2.5 million was approved in Jan. 2008 to renovate the former "Jackson Health Resort"

A branch of Genesee Community College is located in Dansville.

A small yet respectable library does minimal business lending free books, while the Home Video and Blockbuster movie rentals do outstanding business.

Clara Barton--resided in Dansville. Located on 57 Elizabeth Street in the village of Dansville. More interesting though, is the first chapter of the American Red Cross was created in Dansville.

Livingston County New York

Livingston County is a county located in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2000 census, the population was 64,328. It is named after Robert R. Livingston, delegate to the 1775 Continental Congress, member of the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence, and father-in-law of Richard Montgomery, after whom Montgomery County (and similarly named counties in many other states) were named. Its county seat is Geneseo.

History
When counties were established in New York State in 1683, the present Livingston County was part of Albany County. This was an enormous county, including the northern part of New York State as well as all of the present State of Vermont and, in theory, extending westward to the Pacific Ocean. This county was reduced in size on July 3, 1766 by the creation of Cumberland County, and further on March 16, 1770 by the creation of Gloucester County, both containing territory now in Vermont.

On March 12, 1772, what was left of Albany County was split into three parts, one remaining under the name Albany County. One of the other pieces, Tryon County, contained the western portion (and thus, since no western boundary was specified, theoretically still extended west to the Pacific). The eastern boundary of Tryon County was approximately five miles west of the present city of Schenectady, and the county included the western part of the Adirondack Mountains and the area west of the West Branch of the Delaware River. The area then designated as Tryon County now includes 37 counties of New York State. The county was named for William Tryon, colonial governor of New York.

In the years prior to 1776, most of the Loyalists in Tryon County fled to Canada. In 1784, following the peace treaty that ended the American Revolutionary War, the name of Tryon County was changed to Montgomery County in order to honor the general, Richard Montgomery, who had captured several places in Canada and died attempting to capture the city of Quebec, replacing the name of the hated British governor.

In 1789, Ontario County was split off from Montgomery. The actual area split off from Montgomery County was much larger than the present county, also including the present Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, Steuben, Wyoming, Yates, and part of Schuyler and Wayne Counties.

Genesee County was created by a splitting of Ontario County in 1802. This was much larger than the present Genesee County, however. It contained the present Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Wyoming, and portions of Livingston and Monroe Counties.

Livingston County was formed from Genesee and Ontario Counties in 1821.

Livingston County is home to the State University of New York, College at Geneseo (now SUNY Geneseo), one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country.
